Engineered Fills

WHAT IS AN ENGINEERED FILL?

The simplest description of an engineered fill is basically soil and crushed stone, or any mixture thereof that is used to fill a space.  The process of how the mixture is controlled and delivered to the space is also what considers it an engineered fill.

ELASTIZELL EF

At Elastizell Systems Inc, one of the products that we use is called Elastizell EF (Engineered Fill).

CELLULAR CONCRETE is a mixture of Portland cement, water and Elastizell pre-formed foam.  Designs utilizing fly ash, sand and other materials may be included for specific densities and strengths.  Elastizell concrete is cast in densities from 20 to 120 pcf for insulation, semi-structural, and geotechnical applications.  Elastizell concrete is produced by adding Elastizell expansion material, a kind of foam, to a properly designed cementitious mixture.

The unique high strength and low density of Elastizell EF make it an ideal material for reducing loads over compressible soils and underlying structures.  By tailoring the density and excavation depth to the specific site conditions, increases in elevation can be achieved without adding additional load.

Elastizell EF is an excellent solution for a variety of engineered fill applications associated with roadways including, but not limited to:  bridge approaches and bridge fills, fills over culverts, increase elevation fills, landslip repair fills, lightweight levee structures, reduced construction loads, reducing lateral forces, roadway fills, storage silo fills, and weight reducing fills.

Bridge Fills

A bridge approach is a transition between roadway pavement and the actual bridge structure, a bridge fill is the area underneath a bridge, and fills between retaining walls are pretty self explanatory.  In any of those situations, over time, settling can occur causing maintenance issues.  Elastizell EF is an ideal replacement material to previous fill material for any of these instances.

Culvert Fills

A culvert is a structure that allows water to flow under a road, railroad, trail, or similar obstruction from one side to the other side. Typically embedded so as to be surrounded by soil, a culvert may be made from a pipe, reinforced concrete or other material.

Increase Elevation Fills

In order to create a structure that increases in elevation, layers of material would be necessary to build up to the required height.   Elastizell EF is lighter and can be poured between precast modular walls. &nsp; Since Elastizell EF does not transfer loads laterally, minimal support would be required.

Landslip Repair Fills

A landslip or landslide is the movement of soil, mud and/or rocks downhill due to the pull of gravity, heavy or prolonged rain, tremors or shakes, or other man-made causes such as deforestation, quarrying/ rock mining, or bad agricultural practices.   Most occur gradually although some may be sudden.  Landslides are common and can occur in a variety of forms such as breaking off in big chunks, or slip down in small bits.   Landslips may be composed of mud or may contain rocks and other debris.

Elastizell EF can be helpful in replacing the heavy fills such as soil, rocks and gravel with the lighter fill when repairing landslips.

Reduced Construction Load Fills

Conventional construction methods of soil fill and compaction can overload and damage existing culverts.  Strengthening a culvert would require sheeting the excavation around the culvert, excavating a great quantity of fill material, demolishing the box culvert, forming and casting a new culvert.   Then finishing construction by adding numerous layers of fill up to the new ramp height with great deal of compaction for each new layer.

All of this adds weight where using lightweight Elastizell EF to balance the load is a much better method.   By forming the desired fill area then pumping the EF into place prevents overloading of the culvert during construction when it is most susceptible to damage.

Fills for Reducing Lateral Forces

When raising the grade around a building's foundation, one way to construct without reinforcing the existing wall is by using lightweight Elastizell EF.   Using standard fill or lightweight granular fill, the additional load on the surface would exert lateral forces on the wall.  Structurally reinforcing the existing wall would require additional time and expense.  Lightweight Elastizell EF contours to the building while exerting minimal lateral forces on the existing wall.

In roadway construction (or reconstruction), Elastizell EF is an effective method for raising roadway grades over marginal surface soils as well as deep deposits of poor material overlain by fairly good soil.  Load balancing reduces normal roadway loadings for equal or greater final elevations.

In some construction applications, sand or soil is used to fill voids.   When modifications to those existing structures such as requiring a bridge to be wider or longer, the addition of more material means more weight and the new structure would have to be balanced by reducing weight.   Lightweight low density Elastizell EF can be used to replace the heavy sand or soil in such applications.
